Ebonyi State: 3 Dead, Several Injured In Road Accident

At least three persons die yesterday and several others seriously injured in a double road accident that occurred along the 135 axis of the Enugu-Abakaliki Express road and the Oso Edda axis of the Afikpo-Okigwe express road all in Ebonyi State.


An official of Federal Road Safety Commission who spoke to reporter on grounds of anonymity said no live was lost in the Enugu-Abakaliki Express road accident while the one along Afikpo-Okigwe road claimed 3 lives.


According to him; “While our team was on duty along Oso-Edda axis of the Afikpo- Okigwe Express road, they got a distress call that a red color trailer with registration number, KGE 95 XA had a head on collision with a white color Toyota Hiace bus with registration XA 805 KP killing 3 occupants of the Hiace Bus”. “From the observation of our men who had to rush to the scene of the accident to help in rescuing the victims, they attributed the accident to dangerous driving by the drivers.

16 persons were involved in the accident, 10 male and 6 female, unfortunately, 3 of the male occupants died at the spot while 10 others sustained various degrees of injuries”.

He noted that while those who sustained injuries in the crash were rushed to Mater Miserecodia Hospital Afikpo for medical treatment, the corpses of the victims were also deposited at the mortuary of the same hospital.

The FRSC official also stated that the accident along the 135 axis of the Enugu-Abakaliki Express road involved another white Toyota Hiace Bus with registration number AAA 210 XY belonging to a mass transit company in the State and a black Volkswagen gulf with registration number KNM 60 AA.

The 17 passengers involved in the road accident sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital by a team of policemen patrolling along the express road. The victims, he said, were taken to Ezzamgbo general hospital and later transferred, to the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki because of the serious nature of injuries they sustained.

While advising drivers to avoid over speeding on the Abakaliki-Afikpo road under construction which he described as dangerous, he called on the contractors handling the project to always sprinkle water along the road to reduce the danger posed by the dust.

The Command Official also implored the Federal Ministry of Transport to expedite action on the rehabilitation of the Abomege axis of the Afikpo-Abakaliki express road which he described as a death trap. “We commend the Federal Government for rehabilitating a section of the Afikpo-Abakaliki Express road and we still urge them to ensure the rehabilitation of the Abomege axis of the road.

The contractors that handled the project should be urged to ensure the completion of the road as that portion has become a death trap”.
